    Wrapping it up

We finished the season with our last week on Tuesday.  Unfortunately we did not win, but thankfully it didn’t rain, all of the kids were able to swim in a relay and the 15-18 boys and girls relay teams showed Chartwell how much fun it is to be on the Woody Waves!  Can’t wait to see the pictures from the last two events!

Speaking of pictures, if anyone has any great pictures from the parent relays or belly flop contest from the end of season party, you can text them to me and I can get them to the people in the pictures.  I know the coaches were asking if I had any of the belly flop contest and I only took a few.

The season didn’t end on Wednesday for everyone!  We had 23 swimmers go to the ASA Divisional meet at Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon.  Alexander Beard, Matt Gore, Zach Gore, Tristan Ganson, Skylar Ingram, Emma Ritchie, Kate Harkness, Rowan Walsh, Anna Almstedt, Jessie Ganson, Emily Gore, Kate Knudsen, Sariah Soller, Sophie McGuire, Aidan Hegarty, Corbin Shirmeyer, Jake Hegarty, Ethan Moland, Logan Busbee, Preston Shirmeyer, Riley Busbee, Alexis Martin and Kaylie McNeil all participated in this big, county-wide meet.  Congratulations to everyone!  We also had five swimmers qualify to swim in the Finals on Saturday.  Anna Almstedt and Tristan Ganson qualified for both of their individual events and the boys 6&under freestyle relay made up of Alexander Beard, Matt Gore, Zach Gore and Tristan Ganson qualified and finished 5th place overall!  Coach Alexis also qualified for the Finals in the breaststroke.  It was a great, last weekend of swimming for the Woodfield Waves!

In case you haven’t heard the wonderful news, the Woodfield Waves Swim Team is in very good hands for 2018.  Crystal Pelkey (mom of Benny, Bella and Leilani) is going to take the lead role as parent rep next year and will be working with a committee of Renee Vastis, Jessica Harkness and Hope Gricus to organize the team.  There are a few other people who have volunteered to help and I know there will be a job for them!  In the meantime, if you would like to help in some way with the team next year or you have any questions for Crystal, you can reach her at [email protected]

Below are the links to the pictures Brian Gore has taken at the meets.  Thank you, Brian for these great shots!  I will send the pics from Chartwell when I get them.  I hear Brian took over 600 pictures at the last meet!

I have several trophies and ribbons for people who weren’t at practice the last week.  I will send an individual email to families who have things to pick up soon.

One last reminder about the fall season, if you are interested:

Woodfield will not be hosting a team, but if your child is interested in participating, you can contact them and ask what neighborhoods will have teams.

The Atlanta Swim Association (ASA) will be offering a "fall" season in 2017.  This season is targeted (but not limited to) swimmer's age 8-14 and will consist of 5 meets to be held on Saturday mornings.  The meets are tentatively scheduled to begin Saturday, August 19 and end Saturday September 23.  Age groups will be 8 & Under, 9-10, 11-12, 13 and over.  The purpose of the Fall Season is to offer swimmers a more chances to swim in meets without the full time commitment to year round swimming.  Additionally, this season will provide a great chance for kids who will be swimming for their school teams to stay in shape.

The league will feature some of the following:

    ·        We will follow ASA rules, with relaxed membership requirements to allow swimmers access to more teams.  Participation rules will likely be relaxed as well for these meets in an effort to allow kids more chances to swim, including events they may not get to swim in a normal summer league meet.

    ·        We anticipate smaller teams and smaller (shorter) meets.  This will provide some kids a shot at winning events in a meet for the first time, as we anticipate most year round swimmers will be occupied with their fall seasons.

    ·        Meets will be held at a central location each week (kind of mini invitational) and will have automatic timing used for results.

    ·        Team scoring will be kept, but will obviously not be the focus of the meets.

    ·        We plan of offering ribbons and the same essential structure and operational support you get in the summer.

    ·        Like other off season offerings for other sports there will likely be fewer practices offered, but the same 5 dual meets will be available.

    ·        We will have a championship meet at Marist in mid-September as a culmination of the season.  Each swimmer will receive a medal for participating; as well as ribbons for each event.  Entry fees for this meet are $15 per swimmer.

    ·        We hope this will increase participation in middle school and high school swim teams.

    ·        The smaller teams may provide your assistant coaches valuable head coaching opportunities if your normal head coach is unavailable to coach during this season.

    ·        This will also likely offer assistant team managers, parent reps, and other meet volunteers a chance to ease their way into their jobs.

    ·        League fees per swimmer will be $20 with online registration available viaatlantaswimming.com.

    ·        Officials fees will be $20 per team per meet.

If you are interested in having a team, or more info about the program please e mail [email protected] , and stay tuned on atlantaswimming.com for more details.  We would like to get an idea of how many teams we expect to have and how we can best configure the schedule to make it as easy as possible for the teams.  Please share this with your teams and families to spread the word on something that we think will help our sport.  We plan on having informational meetings later this month and hope you can attend.  I will forward dates and times once I have them set.  In the meantime please let me know if you have any questions about this program.
