Important meet information
Hello Woodfield Waves Families!
Please take a few minutes to read this long email. It has a lot of important information regarding the meet tomorrow and practice Friday.
WE DO HAVE PRACTICE ON MEET DAYS!
Tomorrow is the big day! We are swimming at home versus Spring Ridge. Swimmers should arrive at 4:15 and the meet will start at 5:30. The meets usually last around 3 hours. If your child is only doing lessons, we’d love to have you come up and cheer for the team!
At this point if you have an emergency change in your schedule and your child cannot swim, please text both me (678-910-9931) and Grayson (678-764-2266) as soon as you know. Changing the line up at this point has a domino effect, so the sooner we know that information, the better!
Regarding the weather…please plan to arrive at all meets at the scheduled time. We do not cancel meets for potential bad weather and will delay the start if necessary if it is storming. There are over 200 kids swimming in the meets, so they are nearly impossible to reschedule. Both teams, coaches and the referee will work together to get as much of a meet in as possible on the scheduled night. If you are in doubt, you can text me (678-910-9931). Don’t forget to pack an extra supply of patience for the swim meets!
During the meets we sell candy and drinks at our concession stand and this Thursday we will have Nana G’s Chicken and Waffles Food Truck offering dinner, as well. I have attached a menu with prices. It looks delicious to me! Anyone and everyone is welcome to come up and make a purchase from the truck, so tell your neighbors and friends. Thank you to The Kleins and McSpaddens for organizing our concessions this season!
The volunteer schedule is attached to this email. It is possible I will have to make changes, so please be sure to double check the volunteer boards when you get to the meet to verify your assignment and let me know now if you have a conflict.
If your child is swimming in the meet, you have a volunteer assignment.
The goal when assigning jobs is that one person in each family will work for half of the meet.
Please note, the times for each shift are approximate. If you are working the first half, definitely plan to be there at 5:15. If you are working the second half, plan to be there at 6:45. The meets have 86 events and the announcers will let everyone know after event 43 that it is time to switch.
If you are new to the team, it is likely you have been assigned the “bull pen” job. This means you will work with the other parents of that age group to get those kids to the starting blocks in time for their events. I have at least one veteran bull pen parent in each age group, so they will be there to help.
If you have been assigned a job that you are new to or are new to the team, feel free to come talk to me during practice tomorrow. It is much easier for me to explain things there, rather than ten minutes before the meet starts.
The 6 & under events are all in the first half of the meet. If you only have a 6 & under swimmer, you are not expected to stay for the entire meet and will not have a second half job.
Speaking of the bull pen…one of the best things you can do to make the meet run smoothly is make sure you introduce your child (and yourself) to the bull pen parent for their age group. There is nothing worse for a volunteer than wandering around saying, “I need Johnny, but I have no idea who Johnny is.” Please take a moment to seek out the bull pen parent for your child’s age group before the meet starts. Also, explain to your child that he or she needs to be looking out for that parent, as well. If you do not know who someone is, ask me or someone else. I know this all sounds crazy, and it is, but it all works out somehow.
This year the Speeding Tickets will return! Along with their ribbons, swimmers will also receive speeding tickets on Friday mornings when they have made a personal best time in an event. This is very important for a sport like swimming, because in the end you are truly competing against yourself and trying to improve your time in each meet. Due to the size of our team and the “holes” we have in different age groups, it is not likely we will win very many meets this season. It would be great if everyone could help the kids focus on self-improvement as opposed to our team winning a meet. This includes the kids winning their individual events, too. Some kids will never win a first place ribbon, but if they improve their time by 3 or 5 seconds over the season, that is a huge accomplishment and a success to be celebrated!
Starting this Friday, we will have Fun Friday practices after each meet. The pool will be open from 8:30-10:30 for free swim time and we will still have lessons for the 6 & under swim lesson kids from 9:15-9:45. All of the kids are welcome to come have doughnuts starting at 8:30. The kids who swam in the meet can get their ribbons and speeding tickets and we will not have official practice. Come when you can!
I have a few adult t-shirts left. I have 2 white medium, 2 white large and one or two blue tank tops. If you are interested in buying a shirt for $10, come see me at practice. I’ll sell them on a first come, first served basis. If you registered your child for the team or lessons after May 1 and they have not received a t-shirt, come see me. I have YS and YM left.
See you tomorrow!
